Martha Charlene Wynn, 86, of Edgewood, born September 2, 1937, passed away Friday February 16, 2024, at Boonespring in Union. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Henry and Martha Lewis Gains; husband Gayle B. Wynn and brother Charles Herbert Gaines.
Survivors include sons Chad and Gary Wynn; grandchildren Spencer and Wes and sister Betty Gayle Williams (brother in law Dr. David B. Williams.
Charlene was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. She attended and graduated Lafayette High School 1955 and University of Kentucky. While at UK she was a member Alpha Zeta Delta – Sorority. She also was on the UK Academic Bowl Team that competed nationally on television against other colleges. Charlene went on to complete one year of law school at Stetson University College of Law, Florida before marrying Gayle on June 18, 1961.
Charlene substitute taught at several Kenton County schools, worked several retail jobs before starting at Crestview Hills Mall - McAlpin's. She work at McAlpin's for 22 years in various departments before becoming a personal shopper. After retiring from McAlpin's Charlene spent another 10 years working at the Covington Internal Revenue Office retiring again in 2014.
Charlene has always been an active participant in local Sunday worship services, teaching Sunday school, bible studies, finance ministries etc. For the last several years she was a regular attendee of Immanuel Church in Lakeside Park. In addition, to religious affiliations Charlene was active in a number of other philanthropic organizations over the years: Junior Board of Cripple Children, Parent Teachers Association, and NKY Heritage League.
In her free time Charlene was an avid sports enthusiast especially Kentucky Basketball. She enjoyed summers at Beechwood Swim Club, Silverlake water aerobics, playing cards, luncheons with friends, and reading as well as participating in book clubs.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 4 pm. until the time of service at 6:30 p.m. all at Swindler & Currin Funeral Homes, 214 W Southern Ave, Covington, KY 41015. In lieu of flowers suggested memorial donations can be made to American Kidney Foundation (https://www.kidneyfund.org/).
