Patricia Sharon Schaffer Smith went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 18, 2023. She passed away peacefully at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. She recently celebrated her 84th birthday. She is survived by her children, Pamala Brown (Roy) and Donald I. Smith, Jr., her beloved grandchildren, Wesley Brown, Sydney Heising (Joshua),
Chandler Brown-Otworth (Trenton), Noah Schaffer Smith (Mitchell) and Hinzee Aurora Smith, soon to be great granddaughter, Sutton Otworth and her sister, Mary Sue Currin (Ed).
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Donald Irvin Smith Sr., her parents, Homer Floyd Schaffer and Sue Mae LeMaster Schaffer, her sister Rosalee Schaffer and grandson John Donald Brown.
Grandma Pat, to those who knew her best, attended The Ohio State University and later graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She taught mainly 2nd grade at Jenkins Elementary in West Portsmouth. Teaching was her passion and her love for children showed in the many facets of her life. In 1990, she decided to retire and take care of the grandchildren she adored. She loved and supported her grandchildren by attending numerous award ceremonies and sporting events. Grandma Pat wore many other hats and had an entrepreneurial spirit. She cooked for the Boy Scouts one summer at Camp Oyo, sold World Book Encyclopedias, coached senior league softball, had her securities license and sold insurance for A.L. Williams. She was a big Ohio State fan and loved to cheer and watch the Cincinnati Reds.
Grandma Pat loved vacationing at Oak Island, NC with family. She loved it so much that she and her husband purchased a second home there in 1989. Fishing off the pier, getting sand in her toes, eating seafood and just simply relaxing was something they both enjoyed.
Grandma Pat was a diehard republican and a staunch Donald J. Trump supporter. She was a member of the Scioto County Republican Club and a Republican Central Committeeman. She loved attending The Lincoln Day and Reagan Day Banquets and visiting with her many friends. Republicans Central Committee member from 2011 until the time of her passing. Served on the Special Events and Finance committee for the club and worked at the Republican headquarters.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 1st at 2:00 p.m. at the Stockdale United Christian Church in Stockdale, Ohio. The family requests that you wear red, white and blue to show support for her love of country.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SOMC Hospice Center or fill a book bag full of school supplies to be donated to a local school.
