IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley
Schildmeyer
September 19, 2023
Shirley R. Schildmeyer passed away at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood, KY on September 19, 2023, after a brief illness. Shirley was born on October 10, 1946, in Covington, KY. Ten was her favorite number. A lifelong resident of Northern KY, Shirley attended high school at Holy Cross, received her BA in education from Villa Madonna College (now Thomas Moore University) and her MA (actually 2!!--one in reading instruction and one in administration) from Xavier University in Cincinnati. Shirley began her teaching career at 8th District Elementary School in Latonia, teaching third grade. Her grandmother, who lived directly across the street from the school, was thrilled when she landed this position since this allowed Shirley to visit quite often. When 8th District was demolished, Shirley moved to Latonia Elementary School and then to 6th District, again teaching primary grades and eventually becoming principal, one of the first woman principals in the Covington School System, holding that position for 10 years. Shirley's final teaching stint was at Newport Elementary, from where she retired in 2001. Shirley taught many students during her nearly 30 years of teaching and even remembered most of their names. This came in handy at times, especially when pulled over for speeding by a former student (he let her go with a warning). Shirley spent her retirement gardening, cooking, reading and attending classes at Silver Lake, where she very much enjoyed hanging out at the pool with her exercise buddies. During her final years Shirley faced some significant health issues but she was a fighter until the end.
Shirley was preceded in death by her longtime loving partner William Huntman ("Hunts"), parents, Raymond and Bettie Schildmeyer.
She is survived by her siblings, Carla (Bobby) Bilz, Greg (Dori) Schildmeyer, Lisa Schildmeyer, Tessie Schildmeyer and Karl Schildmeyer, nieces Cathy Salata and Laura Paynic, and extended family Rich, Cathy, Natalie, Hailey and Anthony Salata.
